We are absolutely in love with the stunning cover for issue 31 of Exotica Moderne by Australian artist “50s Vintage Dame,” otherwise known as Sue Cadzow. You have probably come across her work on many, many Tiki and Exotica projects, ranging from bar menus to glassware to album covers. We have a feature on her in this issue as well, so if you’re not already a fan of Sue’s work, you will be!
Ray “Tiki With Ray” Wyland sits down with Jim Kruize - rocker turned Tiki carver - and Nicholas Diak returns to our page after a long hiatus with an article on the acclaimed The Donn of Tiki documentary with a behind-the-scenes talk with the creators.
Publisher Ken Holewczynski pens an excursion to one of the best Tiki bars anywhere, Skull and Crown, in Waikiki, while also looking at the stunning black velvet works of Gwen Rosewater.
Everyone’s favorite vibraphone virtuoso, Mark Riddle, offers a first in a series of articles on collecting Exotica music with a focus this time on Ernie Menehune and Tiki Lindy, dovetailing a series of recipes on mid-mod dishes (with updated versions of classics) that ties in nicely with our feature on 50s Vintage Dame.
We also pay tribute to the passing of Tiki’s Danny “Tiki Diablo” Gallardo with quotes from a few prominent folks in the Tiki scene that worked closely with Danny on numerous projects.
In the music department, Moving in Stereo features an interview with Matt Heaton of The Electric Heaters, and we’ve pages of reviews to help you sort through and find that next essential album to add to your collection.
Plus our usual features and more!
